A 20 minute free minibus ride will take participants from the Expo bus bay on Cobbler Pool Rd to beautiful Dawn Atwell Nature Reserve near Toodyay. The reserve protects a wide variety of pristine native vegetation, including colourful Powderbark Wandoo and Banksia woodlands and mixed Jarrah-Marri forest. The reserve is renowned for its wildflowers, with over a hundred species recorded there from the endangered Star Sun Orchid (Thelymitra stellata) to the spectacular Fire Wood Banksia (Banksia menziesii). Following the recent rainfall, early wildflowers are starting to appear including the scarlet flowers of Moss-leaved Heath (Astroloma ciliatum). Some 33 bird species have been observed here.

The fire breaks and tracks are ideal for walking. Apart from one gentle climb the terrain is mostly relatively flat, with about 80m of overall elevation gain and loss during the 5km walk. The walk will be led at an easy pace by an experienced guide and is open to any person in reasonably good health, including accompanied children over the age of six years old. Newcomers to bushwalking will be especially welcome. At the end of the walk the minibus will return you promptly to enjoy the Expo and the Transcend hike-and-run event finish line festivities that continue until 8.30pm.

Participants will be able to register on the day for their free walk, at the HikeWest marquee near the Expo entry off Cobbler Pool Rd, Morangup. See the Advance information for intending participants, if planning to register at the Expo for a guided walk.

HikeWest very gratefully acknowledges the generosity of King Mini Bus Charter Perth for providing the minibus support, so making this opportunity possible for Hiking Expo attendees.
