HikeWest and Nature Play WA have undertaken research to better understand the barriers that may prevent families from enjoying Western Australia’s bushwalking trails. The research involved a desktop review of existing family hiking resources, followed by an online focus group with local families. A range of barriers were highlighted, including:
- Lack of information on trail facilities (like toilets, shade, or pram access) and inconsistent signage.
- Safety concerns, including supervising children in natural environments, poor mobile reception, and risks for families with neurodiverse children.
- Practical challenges, such as limited public transport, one-way trail designs, and difficulty navigating with children.
- Financial constraints, including the costs of gear, fuel, and park entry.
- Environmental factors like heat, flies, and wildlife unfamiliarity – especially for migrant families.
- Cultural and language barriers, with a need for more inclusive and translated resources.
Families also shared what encourages them to get outdoors. Motivators included:
- Social connection – group walks with other families reduce the pressure on parents and make the experience more fun for children.
- Engaging environments – trails close to playgrounds, beaches, or cafés add to the appeal.
- Interactive activities – scavenger hunts, geocaching, or simple nature-based games keep kids entertained along the way.
- Educational elements – signage with local wildlife, plants, or cultural stories adds curiosity and learning.
- Adventure framing – describing the walk as a “mission” or “exploration” boosts children’s excitement, especially when they’re given small leadership roles.
- Incentives – rewards like an ice cream afterwards help keep kids motivated and eager for the next outing.
In response, we’ve developed a list of family-friendly trails in Perth and surrounds and have used the findings to inform the Family Hiking Program walks we’re offering in 2025. These walks are designed to be welcoming, inclusive, and fun for children and parents alike.
