Safety: What is a PLB and should you invest in one?

Although hiking offers incredible opportunities to explore nature, it also involves risks, particularly if you enjoy hiking in more remote locations. A personal locator beacon (PLB) could save your life in an emergency. Here’s what you need to know about PLBs and their benefits.

What is a PLB?

A personal locator beacon is a compact, handheld device which sends an emergency distress signal to rescue services. When activated, a PLB transmits your location via satellite to emergency responders, enabling them to find you quickly. Unlike mobile phones, which rely on cell towers, PLBs operate on satellite frequencies, providing coverage even in the most remote locations.

The benefits of PLBs

  • Since PLBs use satellite networks, they function even where mobile phone service is unavailable.

  • By providing precise location data, PLBs help rescuers reach you faster.
  • Unlike mobile phones, PLBs have long-lasting batteries which can last
5–10 years without charging or replacement.
  • Unlike satellite messengers, PLBs typically do not require monthly service fees, making them a cost-effective safety tool.

How to use a PLB

  1. After purchasing a PLB, you’ll need to register it online with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. This links the device to your personal details, making the rescue process more efficient.
  2. Test your PLB according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Ensure your PLB is in a convenient, accessible location in your pack so you don’t need to fumble around for it when you need it.
  4. In an emergency, activate the PLB by pressing a button.
  5. A distress signal will be sent via satellite to the closest rescue coordination centre.
  6. Search-and-rescue authorities will send a rescue team to your GPS location.
  7. After you’ve activated the PLB, stay where you are until rescuers find you.

Choosing the right PLB

When selecting a PLB, consider the following features:

  • A built-in GPS enhances location accuracy.
  • A PLB should have a battery of at least 5 years. Ensure the device has a long-lasting, and preferably replaceable, battery.
  • Choose a waterproof model that will be durable in the outdoors.
  • A compact and lightweight PLB is easier to carry on long hikes.

PLBs vs satellite messengers

While PLBs are excellent for emergency distress signalling, satellite messengers offer additional features that may be beneficial for hikers. Unlike PLBs, satellite messengers allow for two-way communication, enabling you to send and receive messages from loved ones or emergency services. Some modern PLBs also include limited messaging capabilities, bridging the gap between traditional PLBs and satellite messengers; however, satellite messengers typically require a monthly subscription service, whereas standard PLBs do not. Choosing between a PLB, a satellite messenger, or a hybrid device depends on your hiking habits, need for communication, and budget.

Using a PLB responsibly

  • Only use a PLB in a true emergency. Activating a PLB signals to authorities that you are in life-threatening danger. Misuse can lead to unnecessary rescues and wasted resources.
  • You should also test the PLB regularly to ensure it’s functioning, following  manufacturer guidelines.

Final thoughts

While preparation, navigation skills, and common sense are key to a safe hiking experience, having a PLB provides an extra layer of security. Whether you’re a solo hiker or part of a group, carrying a PLB could mean the difference between life and death in a crisis. If you love hiking in remote areas, investing in a PLB is a smart and potentially life-saving decision.
